Chinese New Years: What’s it like at Charterhouse?

The Chinese New Year – an event that varies with in accordance with the Chinese lunisolar calendar – took place this week on Tuesday, 5th of February.

While Carthusians may not be able to travel up to London, Birmingham, Manchester, or Liverpool for the major celebrations that took place, there have been a number of small celebrations around school.

Last week, the Oriental Cooking Society, headed by Gloria Liu and Sophia Yu, made ‘tang yuan’ – glutinous rice balls filled with red bean paste, signifying family togetherness – in anticipation of the Year of the Pig.

This Wednesday, the Chinese Culture Club has also invited its members to a meal in recognition of this important event. It is expected to be a merry dinner – but do not simply ‘pig out’ on the array of colorful food, but also remember to socialise!
